Lautech Toilet: A Cry For Its Rehabilitation

Listen to article

A friend, Omotade won't stop complaining about the blockage of the shortcuts leading into the campus; his favourite route had been blocked also. The routes were blocked ahead of the 11th Convocation ceremony held in the school; blocked for security reasons, as widely claimed.

Omotade's complaint was spurred by what he experienced on the final day of the convocation ceremony. During the ceremony, Omotade got engaged in what I'll call 'Aluta Esophagus', the struggle to perch the throat and fill the belly.

He incautiously ate all (different kind of food and drinks) that came his way and was later faced with the consequence of his covetousness; he purged till he got unconscious. That day, Omotade was already seated to write his last paper of the just concluded rain semester examination of the 2012/2013 academic session, when nature called. He ran out of the hall, headed to the school gate where he hopped on a bike which took him to his hostel to ease himself. Many students experience such daily!

The toilet Omotade could have visited is in a rather bad and disgusting state, with piles of debris in its insides; this is the Ultra-modern public toilet beside 250LT, which was refurbished by the 2008/2009 Student Union regime led by Com. Quadri Moruff, LEGACY. I wrote about it during the 2011/2012 regime led by Com. Sulaiman Makanjuola Kazeem, STEAM, in an article published by 'Lautech Torch' news bulletin, titled: 'Lautech Public Toilet: A Call To Service'.

In the article, I wrote of how I visited the toilet; the unkempt surroundings and the stinking state which made me vomit, how there were flies hovering around, producing a buzzing sound track while I was answering the nature's call. The flies had no courtesy at all, as they fled straight into my lip without any care not fearing that the Sketch Pad lying on the floor could be used to smack them down.

Sadly, nothing was done about the toilet, a blind-eye was turned at it, even by the administration that came after. This is one of the reasons so many students have no trust in our Union, for it has failed in part of its responsibilities; failed to do the little things that count much.

LADOKITES seem to have lost hope in the Union; little wonder only less than 5000 students out of over 35000 student came out to vote during the last election. The Legislative arm of the Union has also failed to make a move on the abandoned toilet, for it lies at the nose of the hall where it usually holds it sittings.

The basic mandate of our Student Union is to defend the right and seek to better the 'Total Welfarism' of all students. Thus, it is demanding of the present regime to do something about the toilet. I do not know maybe it was built either by the School management or the Student Union, nevertheless, if an administration of the Student Union could get the toilet overhauled, nothing should then stop the succeeding administrations from maintaining and keeping it in a good state. A spirited effort is needed to renovate the dilapidated toilet and make it tidy always, in other to prevent the looming danger it may pose.
