NIGERIA CANNOT DIVIDE

There have been several calls by people to divide Nigeria. War has been fought to divide Nigeria. Lord Lugard has been severally accused of lump-suming parallel lines to retain Nigeria. Boko haram insurgency has renewed the call to divide Nigeria. Sectarian killings in Jos, Plateau state has renewed the repeated calls to divide Nigeria. Militancy in Niger Delta has threatened to pull the Region out of Nigeria. Currently, boko haram has charged all Christians and Southerners to vacate Northern Nigeria preparatory to dividing Nigeria. In the pre-independence Nigeria. Ahmadu Bello, Tafawa Balewa and Obafemi Awolowo had at one time or the other in 1947, 1953, 1956, 1957 and 1958 threatened to pull their regions out of Nigeria. Killing of Igbos by all – inclusive other Nigerians between May 29, 1966 and May 26, 1967 prompted the Igbos to want to pull themselves out of Nigeria, but they failed and Nigeria was reconciled. Gowon had on August 3rd, 1966 said “there is no basis for one Nigeria”. Tafawa Balewa had in 1947 before Northern Regional Assembly said “There is no basis for one Nigeria” Ahmadu Bello had in 1953 during his 8 – Point Agenda said “there is no basis for one Nigeria”. Obafemi Awolowo had in 1956 threatened to pull Western Region out of Nigeria if Lagos was not made part of Western Region.

Hence, all Regions have made their claims of disintegrating Nigeria, but all failed. If it is a mistake, the human rights activist called by his name Nigeria Unity, enjoins any body tempted to secede to place the blame of one Nigeria on GOD. Let it be that GOD made the mistake of uniting Nigeria, so that we must not expect a secession or division again. The only thing we can do is to devise means of living together and enjoying it, not enduring it.
