Uganda blocks social media during presidential elections

By The Citizen

Social media has been blocked in Uganda because of security concerns as tightly contested presidential elections are held, officials say.

Mobile money services had also been shut to make sure they would not be used to bribe voters, they added.

However, many users have found a way around the controversial restrictions.

President Yoweri Museveni, 71, is seeking to extend his 30-year rule, in a race widely seen as the tightest in the East African state’s history.

His main challenger is his former physician, Kizza Besigye.

He has said he does not think the election will be free and fair.

Former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi is also seen as a leading contender for the presidency.

Mr Mbabazi has tweeted on how to get around the internet restrictions:

Media systems happen to vary in different countries depending on their leaders or their constitution. During the study of this course I was able to understand that there are different ways the media could be practiced. For instance, take a look at the way the media is run in Nigeria. The government as a whole including the president gets shamed steadily without actual purnishment for such disrespectful acts. According to the situation addressed above, the Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni has been accused of making statements aimed at threatening the press. The secretary general, Justine Lumumba said the media was being used to fuel a hate campaign against Museveni therefore publicly calling for a need to censor the radio and social media. In Nigeria a lot more has been done and said concerning the present president of the country and yet the media hasn’t been threatened openly or been called ‘’evil’’ and ‘’st*p*d’’. The threats by the Ugandan president has however served as an invitation to possible press attacks instead of promoting press freedom. JINADU OYINKANSOLA 400L MASS COMMUNICATION.
