Italian Development Cooperation: emergency aid for the Republic of Congo

By Italy - Ministry of Foreign Affairs

ROME, Italy, March 12, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- Italian Development Cooperation has made a donation of 50,000 euros in response to the serious emergency that has been developing in the Congo since 4 March, following the explosion of a munitions depot in the capital, Brazzaville. The aid is to support the emergency appeal launched by the International Red Cross and Red Crescent. The explosion caused 246 deaths, with 1500 injured and about 3500 evacuated.

The help from Italy will support the Congolese Red Cross's humanitarian effort. This involves 300 of the most vulnerable households (about 1500 people). The initiative, which will last for 4 months, will see 200 volunteers distribute essential supplies (blankets, mosquito nets, clothing, personal hygiene supplies, cooking utensils and plastic sheeting) and food supplies.

Italy's aim is to provide support and concrete help for the Republic of Congo at this difficult time.
