Argentina Face Possible FIFA Action Following England Victory Celebrations
Argentina could face disciplinary action from FIFA after events that unfolded during the team's celebrations following its dramatic 2-1 victory over England in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final.
The South American champions booked their place in the final after staging a late comeback. England looked on course for victory after Anthony Gordon's opening goal, but Enzo Fernández equalised in the closing stages before substitute Lautaro Martínez scored the winner in stoppage time to send Argentina into another World Cup final.
However, attention has shifted away from the result after some Argentina players were seen celebrating with a banner referring to the Falkland Islands, a politically sensitive issue between Argentina and the United Kingdom.
FIFA and the International Football Association Board (IFAB) have strict regulations prohibiting political messages, symbols or slogans from being displayed during official football competitions.
Under football's disciplinary rules, teams or players found guilty of violating these regulations can face sanctions imposed by FIFA or the tournament organisers.
The controversy comes after similar political chants reportedly emerged following Argentina's quarter-final victory, adding to concerns over repeated incidents during the competition.
The heated rivalry between the two nations also extended beyond the pitch. Reports indicated that confrontations broke out involving supporters after the match, with police responding to disturbances around the stadium. Additional clashes were also reported among fans in other locations.
Tensions were evident at the final whistle as players from both teams exchanged heated words before officials and teammates stepped in to prevent the situation from escalating further.
FIFA is now expected to review the incidents before deciding whether any disciplinary measures will be taken against Argentina or individuals involved in the celebrations.
