Nigerian football icon Austin "Jay-Jay" Okocha has shared fresh details about the hardships the country's Olympic football team endured before securing the historic gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Games.

Speaking about the memorable campaign, Okocha explained that the team's remarkable achievement was built on resilience and sacrifice rather than ideal preparations.

According to him, many of the difficulties faced by the squad happened behind the scenes and remained unknown to the public.

The former Super Eagles captain revealed that administrative and financial challenges disrupted the team's training camp in the United States.

He recalled that unpaid bills affected essential services, leaving the players to cope with difficult conditions while preparing for one of the biggest tournaments of their careers.

Okocha said the squad survived on the same meal for several days because of the situation, adding that players were informed the hotel had not received payment for accommodation and catering.

Despite the uncertainty, the team remained united and focused on their goal of bringing success to Nigeria.

He also disclosed that some members of the squad contributed their own money to cover accommodation expenses and arrange transportation, ensuring the team could continue preparing for the competition without major interruptions.

According to Okocha, those sacrifices strengthened the players' determination and helped build the spirit that eventually carried them to Olympic glory.

Nigeria's Dream Team went on to make history by becoming the first African nation to win the Olympic men's football tournament.

Their victory remains one of the country's greatest sporting achievements, with Okocha believing the challenges they overcame made the triumph even more meaningful and unforgettable.
