EU Lawmakers Demand Probe Into Infantino Over Balogun Decision

FIFA president Gianni Infantino is facing mounting pressure after a group of 72 members of the European Parliament called for an investigation into his handling of the Folarin Balogun disciplinary case during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The lawmakers have urged football associations across the European Union to examine the circumstances surrounding the decision that allowed the United States forward to avoid serving a suspension following his red card.

The controversy intensified after reports emerged that U.S. President Donald Trump had personally discussed the matter with Infantino.

According to the lawmakers, FIFA's own regulations require football's governing body and its officials to remain politically neutral.

They argued that any suggestion of political influence over disciplinary matters could damage confidence in the organisation's decision-making process and undermine the integrity of the World Cup.

Infantino has rejected claims of improper conduct, insisting that FIFA's judicial committees function independently and without interference.

He maintained that his conversation with Trump did not alter the disciplinary process, saying he merely outlined the procedures already in place while the case remained under review.

The issue has also drawn a response from UEFA, which warned that football's credibility depends on the consistent application of its rules.

Europe's governing body expressed concern that any perception of unequal treatment could weaken trust in the sport and create an undesirable precedent for future competitions.

The growing controversy has placed FIFA under increased scrutiny as the World Cup continues, with many observers now awaiting whether European football associations will support calls for a formal review of the Balogun decision and FIFA's handling of the matter.
