World Cup 2026: Guéhi Tips Mexico As Favourites Against England
England defender Marc Guéhi has admitted that Mexico should be considered the favourites when the two nations meet in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Three Lions booked their place in the knockout stage after fighting back to defeat DR Congo 2-1, setting up a difficult encounter with the tournament co-hosts at the famous Estadio Azteca on Sunday.
Despite England's quality, Guéhi believes Mexico hold a slight advantage because they will be playing in familiar surroundings and backed by thousands of passionate supporters.
He noted that the home side are well accustomed to the conditions, including the high altitude in Mexico City, which could make life difficult for visiting teams.
The Crystal Palace defender also praised Mexico's impressive performances at the tournament, pointing out that they have yet to concede a goal and have maintained a flawless record so far.
According to him, those factors naturally make them the team to beat heading into the contest.
However, Guéhi insisted England are embracing the challenge rather than fearing it. He said matches against elite opponents in electric atmospheres are exactly what players dream of at a World Cup, adding that the squad is excited about the opportunity to test themselves.
Mexico have turned the Estadio Azteca into a fortress over the years, suffering very few defeats in competitive fixtures there.
England will also be returning to the iconic stadium for the first time since their memorable 1986 World Cup defeat to Argentina, making Sunday's clash another historic occasion.
