Ronald Koeman Steps Down as Netherlands Head Coach After World Cup Exit
Former Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman has stepped down from his role following his team's disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Dutch Football Association confirmed that Koeman decided to leave after the Netherlands were knocked out by Morocco in the Round of 32, bringing an abrupt end to their campaign.
The 63-year-old announced his decision in a heartfelt message, admitting he was deeply saddened that the team failed to achieve its objective at the tournament.
Koeman said everyone within the squad dreamed of making history at the World Cup, but accepted that the responsibility for the disappointing outcome rested with him as head coach.
He expressed regret that the team could not progress further despite months of preparation.
Beyond football, the former Barcelona coach revealed that recent personal experiences had changed his priorities.
He explained that watching his wife, Bartina, battle a serious illness had reminded him that family and health are far more important than success on the pitch.
According to Koeman, his wife continued to encourage him throughout the World Cup despite her own health challenges, a gesture he described as a source of strength and inspiration.
Koeman returned for his second spell as Netherlands boss in January 2023 after previously managing the national team between 2018 and 2020.
During his tenure, he guided the Dutch through several major competitions and oversaw the development of a new generation of players.
His resignation now leaves the Netherlands searching for a new coach to lead the team into the next phase of international football.
