Cape Verde Hold Saudi Arabia to Seal Historic Last-32 Spot

Cape Verde continued their remarkable debut FIFA World Cup campaign after securing a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia to book a historic place in the Round of 32.

The result ensured the African nation finished second in Group H with three points from three consecutive draws.

Spain topped the group with seven points after defeating Uruguay, while both Uruguay and Saudi Arabia exited the tournament with two points each.

Playing in front of more than 68,000 fans at NRG Stadium in Houston, Cape Verde once again displayed discipline and resilience.

Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha was the standout performer, producing a series of impressive saves to frustrate Saudi Arabia throughout the contest.

The 40-year-old denied Mohamed Kanno before halftime and later made crucial stops to keep out efforts from Mohammed Abu Al-Shamat and Abdullah Al-Hamdan as Saudi Arabia searched desperately for a breakthrough.

Cape Verde also threatened at the other end, with Kevin Pina firing narrowly over the crossbar in the second half.

Laros Duarte came close after forcing a save from Mohammed Al-Owais, while Nuno da Costa missed a late opportunity in stoppage time.

Although neither side found the back of the net, the final whistle sparked emotional celebrations among Cape Verde's players and supporters after Spain's victory over Uruguay confirmed their qualification.

The achievement makes Cape Verde, a nation with a population of just over 500,000, the smallest country ever to reach the FIFA World Cup knockout stage.

They will now face defending champions Argentina in the Round of 32, hoping to extend their fairytale journey.
