Africa enjoyed a strong presence at the 2026 NBA Draft as more than 10 players with African roots were selected across both rounds in Brooklyn, New York.

Nigeria led the way with six players drafted, further highlighting the country's growing influence in global basketball.

The draft began with a major milestone as AJ Dybantsa, who has Congolese heritage, was selected first overall by the Washington Wizards.

Rwanda also celebrated representation through Nate Ament, who was chosen by the Miami Heat in the first round.

Players of Nigerian descent were among the standout names. Ebuka Okorie and Zuby Ejiofor both secured first-round selections, continuing the trend of Nigerian talent making an impact at the highest level of the sport.

The second round brought even more success for Nigeria. Otega Oweh, Felix Okpara, Tobi Lawal and Ugonna Onyenso all heard their names called, taking the country's total to six draftees.

Onyenso's selection was particularly notable as the Owerri-born center became another product of NBA Academy Africa to reach the league.

Ghana also had reason to celebrate after Jack Kayil was drafted by the Houston Rockets. The German-born guard with Ghanaian heritage has enjoyed a rapid rise through European basketball and is regarded as one of the continent's promising young talents.

The draft once again demonstrated Africa's growing role in producing elite basketball players. Development programmes such as NBA Academy Africa and Basketball Without Borders continue to create pathways for talented prospects, helping more African players achieve their dream of reaching the NBA.
