By Okiki Oluwasegun

South Africa booked their place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Korea in their final Group A match.

The decisive encounter saw Bafana Bafana produce a disciplined performance against a South Korean side that dominated possession but struggled to convert its control into clear scoring opportunities.

South Korea entered the match as favourites and enjoyed nearly 70 percent of the ball throughout the contest. However, South Africa remained organised defensively and looked dangerous whenever they launched quick attacks on the counter.

After a goalless first half, the breakthrough arrived in the 63rd minute. Thapelo Maseko found space inside the attacking area and calmly finished after being set up by teammate Thabang Moremi.

The goal sparked celebrations among South African supporters and shifted the pressure firmly onto their opponents.

South Korea responded by making several attacking substitutions, including introducing experienced captain Son Heung-min as they searched for an equaliser.

The Asian side pushed numbers forward and created a handful of chances, but South Africa's defence stood firm under sustained pressure.

Goalkeeper and defenders combined effectively to frustrate South Korea, while the midfield worked tirelessly to protect the lead.

Despite having fewer shots and significantly less possession, Bafana Bafana made their opportunities count and executed their game plan successfully.

As the clock wound down, South Korea became increasingly desperate, but South Africa continued to defend with determination. Their resilience was rewarded when the final whistle confirmed a famous victory.

The result represents a major achievement for South African football and keeps their World Cup dream alive.

The team showed discipline, tactical awareness and fighting spirit against one of Asia’s strongest national sides.

For South Korea, the defeat brought a disappointing end to their campaign. Despite controlling large portions of the match, they were unable to break down a well-organised South African defence.

South Africa now advances with confidence and momentum, hoping to extend its impressive run when the knockout rounds begin.
