Switzerland secured top spot in Group B of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Canada 2-1 in Vancouver on Wednesday night.

The victory ensured the Swiss finished ahead of Canada in the standings and advanced to the knockout stage as group winners.

While both teams had already secured progression to the next round, first place in the group was still up for grabs, making the encounter an important one.

After a closely contested first half, Switzerland raised the tempo after the break and found the breakthrough shortly into the second period. Rubén Vargas opened the scoring with a well-taken effort that gave Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau little chance.

The goal shifted momentum in Switzerland’s favour as they began to dominate possession and create more opportunities.

Their pressure paid off again when young midfielder Johan Manzambi doubled the advantage. The 20-year-old, who has emerged as one of the tournament’s rising stars, continued his impressive run of form with another crucial contribution.

Facing a two-goal deficit, Canada pushed forward in search of a response. The home supporters were given hope in the 76th minute when substitute Promise David scored almost immediately after entering the match. His goal reignited the atmosphere inside the stadium and set up a tense finish.

Canada continued to attack during the closing stages, creating chances and searching for an equaliser that would have allowed them to finish top of the group.

However, the Swiss defence remained organised and successfully protected their lead until the final whistle.

The defeat denied Canada the opportunity to remain in Vancouver for the next phase of the competition. Instead, the North Americans will travel to California for their Round of 32 fixture.

Despite the setback, Canada can still celebrate a historic achievement after reaching the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time.

For Switzerland, the victory underlined their status as one of the tournament’s most consistent teams. After a slow start to their campaign, they have steadily improved with each match and now enter the knockout stage full of confidence.

The Swiss will enjoy a brief rest before learning their next opponents, while Canada shifts its focus to preparing for another historic challenge.

Both nations remain alive in the competition, but Switzerland heads into the next round with momentum after claiming first place in Group B through a disciplined and efficient performance.
