England midfielder Declan Rice has admitted that breaking down Ghana’s defence was a major challenge after both sides played out a 0-0 draw in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group L encounter.

Ghana delivered a disciplined and compact defensive performance, frustrating England throughout the match and ensuring they left with a valuable point. The result keeps both teams level on four points heading into the final group fixtures.

England controlled possession for large parts of the game but struggled to find space in the final third, with Ghana’s deep defensive block proving difficult to penetrate.

Carlos Queiroz’s side remained well-organised, often setting up in a 5-4-1 shape without the ball, closing down passing lanes and limiting England’s attacking rhythm.

Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare was impressive once again, producing key saves in the second half to deny Harry Kane and preserve Ghana’s clean sheet.

The Black Stars also showed strong defensive awareness, with repeated blocks and clearances under pressure.

Speaking after the match, Rice praised Ghana’s approach while reflecting on England’s missed opportunities.

“It is always difficult when you play against 11 behind the ball as deep as they were, but you have to find solutions,” Rice said. “In the last 10 minutes we were unlucky not to score.”

He added that England must remain positive heading into their final group game against Panama, stressing that the team still has a strong chance to finish top of the group despite the setback.

Both sides now turn their attention to decisive final fixtures that will determine qualification for the knockout stage.
