World Cup 2026: Tunisia Coach Announces Post-Tournament Exit

By Okiki Oluwasegun

Tunisia head coach Hervé Renard has confirmed that he will step down from his position following the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup 2026, bringing an end to what was always intended to be a short-term assignment with the North African team.

Renard, who was appointed to replace Sabri Lamouchi after Tunisia suffered a heavy 5-0 defeat to Belgium in a previous campaign phase, stated that his role with the Carthage Eagles was strictly tied to the World Cup tournament and would not continue beyond it.

He emphasized that there were no discussions or agreements in place to extend his stay with the national team after June 2026.

The French tactician’s tenure has been challenging, with Tunisia struggling to find consistency on the global stage.

A defeat against Japan in their second group match has already ended their hopes of progressing further in the tournament, leaving their final group game against the Netherlands as a formality rather than a decisive encounter.

Despite the early exit, Renard maintained that his focus remains on ensuring the team finishes the competition with pride.

He urged his players to show character, discipline, and determination in their remaining fixture, stressing the importance of representing their country with dignity even in difficult circumstances.

Speaking to reporters, he explained that his commitment was always centred on the World Cup mission alone, adding that he had not signed any contract beyond the tournament period.

His statement effectively confirms that Tunisia will need a new long-term coaching direction after the competition concludes.

As the Carthage Eagles prepare for their final group match, attention is already shifting toward the future, with questions surrounding who will take over the national team and how Tunisia plans to rebuild after another disappointing World Cup campaign.
