World Cup 2026: Senegal Still in the Race - Pape Thiaw
Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw remains optimistic that the Teranga Lions still have a pathway to the round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026, despite suffering back-to-back defeats in the group stage.
Senegal began their campaign with a disappointing 3-1 loss to France before narrowly falling 3-2 to Norway in their second group match.
The results have left the African side in a difficult position, but the head coach insists the team is not out of the competition yet.
With one group match remaining against Iraq, Senegal’s qualification hopes now depend on securing a victory and hoping results elsewhere go in their favour.
A win could still be enough to see them progress as one of the best third-placed teams in the tournament.
Speaking after the defeat to Norway, Thiaw admitted the situation is challenging but refused to accept elimination at this stage. He stressed that the team’s focus must now shift entirely to the final group fixture.
According to him, the squad understands the importance of responding strongly after two losses, especially as it marks the first time Senegal have opened a World Cup campaign with consecutive defeats.
However, he believes there is still enough time to turn things around.
Thiaw emphasized that belief within the camp remains intact, adding that football often changes quickly and one positive result can shift the entire direction of a tournament campaign.
He urged his players to stay composed, correct their mistakes, and approach the final match with maximum concentration.
He also noted that reaching the next round would essentially reset the competition for them, as knockout football brings a different level of intensity and opportunity.
For now, Senegal’s fate remains uncertain, but their coach is confident the team still has a fighting chance if they can deliver when it matters most against Iraq.
