Sweden Will Bounce Back From Netherlands Loss – Potter

By Okiki Oluwasegun

Sweden head coach Graham Potter has admitted his side must draw lessons from their heavy 5-1 defeat to the Netherlands at the FIFA World Cup 2026 in Houston, describing the result as painful but important for the team’s development.

The Swedes were overwhelmed by a clinical Dutch performance led by Ronald Koeman, with Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo both netting braces in a dominant display that exposed Sweden’s defensive weaknesses.

Despite briefly responding through Anthony Elanga in the second half, Sweden struggled to maintain control as Crysencio Summerville added further damage late on to seal a comprehensive victory for the Dutch side.

Potter admitted his team had moments of promise, especially in attack, but conceded that defensive lapses and poor game management ultimately decided the match.

He noted that conceding multiple goals in quick succession left Sweden with too much to recover from, despite a more positive spell just after the break.

The coach stressed that the focus now shifts to their final Group F fixture against Japan, where qualification hopes could still be decided.

He urged his players to improve their finishing and maintain concentration for the full 90 minutes, highlighting that small errors were punished at the highest level.

While disappointed, Potter insisted the experience would serve as a valuable learning curve for his young squad as they continue their World Cup 2026 journey.

Sweden now face a decisive test, with their ability to respond under pressure likely to define whether they progress to the knockout stages or exit early from the tournament.
