“Devastated to see him go” — Reece James opens up on Cucurella departure
Chelsea captain Reece James has expressed his disappointment following the departure of teammate Marc Cucurella, describing the moment as an emotional one for the dressing room.
Cucurella has completed a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid in a deal reportedly worth €55 million plus add-ons, bringing an end to his four-year spell at Stamford Bridge.
During his time at Chelsea, the Spanish left-back played a key role in the club’s success, including winning the Club World Cup and UEFA Conference League.
Speaking while on international duty at England’s World Cup camp in Kansas City, James admitted he was saddened to see his teammate leave.
He revealed that he had spoken to Cucurella shortly before the transfer was finalised, praising him as one of the best left-backs in world football. According to James, the move is simply part of the modern game, where players frequently change clubs, but that does not make the emotional side any easier.
“I’m devastated to see him go,” James said, while also wishing him success in his new chapter in Spain.
Cucurella’s exit leaves Chelsea with a gap to fill in defence as they prepare for a new era under fresh tactical leadership.
The club is expected to rely on emerging talents within the squad as well as new arrivals to strengthen the left-back position.
Despite the loss, there is optimism at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea continue rebuilding with a focus on youth development and long-term squad balance ahead of the new season.
