The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has finalized arrangements for the 2026 Commonwealth Games Trials, setting the stage for a highly competitive selection process as athletes battle for places in the national team.

The three-day championship is scheduled to take place from June 20 to 22 in Lagos, bringing together some of the country’s top track and field stars.

The event will determine who represents Nigeria at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2.

Action begins on the opening day with several key events across track and field disciplines. Athletes will compete in races such as the 5,000m, 100m heats, and 400m rounds, alongside field events including discus, high jump, long jump, shot put, and triple jump.

The busy schedule is expected to attract strong attention as competitors aim to secure qualification spots early in the trials.

The second day will shift focus to endurance and technical events, including race walking, hammer throw, javelin, and triple jump finals.

Sprint events will also intensify with the semi-finals of the 100m and 400m races, setting up what is expected to be a thrilling conclusion to the sprint categories.

Day two will also feature the finals of the 100m races, widely regarded as one of the highlights of the trials due to the depth of sprinting talent in Nigeria.

The final day will round off the competition with hurdles, 200m races, and middle-distance events such as the 1,500m. Field events like the javelin, high jump, and discus will also take place, alongside the concluding sprint finals.

The trials are expected to serve as a major platform for emerging talents and established athletes to prove their readiness for international competition, as Nigeria prepares for another strong showing at the Commonwealth Games.
