Real Madrid’s new signing, Marc Cucurella, has opened up about his decision to join the Spanish giants, revealing that a conversation with head coach José Mourinho played a key role in confirming his move from Chelsea.

The defender completed a £52 million transfer to the LaLiga side this summer, becoming one of several high-profile additions expected to strengthen the squad ahead of the new season.

Speaking to Spanish outlet El Mundo, Cucurella said the opportunity to play for Real Madrid was too big to turn down and required no hesitation on his part.

“When Madrid came, I didn’t think about it. It’s a unique opportunity. Playing for Real Madrid is an honour and not many players can say it, so I had no doubts,” he said.

He also revealed details of a reassuring phone call with Mourinho before finalising the transfer. According to him, the Portuguese manager expressed strong belief in his abilities and assured him he would settle quickly at the club.

“He told me that he really wanted to work with me, that I was going to adapt very well, that Madrid was a great club. I am looking forward to working with him,” Cucurella added.

The Spanish left-back is among a trio of marquee signings already confirmed by Real Madrid this summer, alongside Bernardo Silva and Ibrahima Konaté. Dutch international Denzel Dumfries is also reportedly close to completing a move to the club.

The arrivals are part of a broader squad rebuild aimed at boosting Madrid’s competitiveness across all competitions next season. With Mourinho now leading the project, expectations are high as the club looks to blend experienced stars with new signings.

Cucurella’s comments highlight the growing appeal of Real Madrid’s project and the influence of direct conversations with the coach in shaping modern transfer decisions.
