“Leave Politics Out of Football” — Williams Urges Fans After Online Criticism

South Africa captain Ronwen Williams has called for African unity and urged fans to separate politics from football following online backlash linked to comments he was wrongly accused of making during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Williams, who featured in South Africa’s opening Group match against Mexico, has been at the centre of social media controversy after claims circulated that he expressed disappointment over a lack of continental support for Bafana Bafana.

The goalkeeper has now strongly denied those statements, insisting his words were taken out of context and misrepresented online.

In a video released by the South African Broadcasting Corporation, Williams clarified that he never criticised African fans or suggested any division among nations.

He stressed that he has always believed in unity across the continent, especially during global tournaments where African teams represent a shared identity on the world stage.

The 32-year-old also expressed frustration over the emotional toll of misinformation on players, noting that footballers are often drawn into debates that go beyond the sport.

He explained that athletes already deal with pressure on the pitch and should not be burdened with unrelated political or social narratives.

Williams further highlighted the unifying power of football, pointing out how fans from different countries are currently gathering together at World Cup venues in the United States.

According to him, the beauty of the sport lies in its ability to bring people together regardless of background or nationality.

He concluded by urging supporters to focus on performances on the pitch and allow players to concentrate on their responsibilities.

Williams reiterated that football should remain a space for enjoyment, competition, and unity, while political issues should be left to political leaders to address.
