Ghana Leave It Late to Defeat Panama in World Cup Opener
Ghana secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening Group L match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, thanks to a stoppage-time strike from Caleb Yirenkyi in Toronto.
The encounter was largely cagey, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut opportunities for much of the contest.
Panama appeared well-organised throughout and successfully limited the influence of Ghana’s attacking players, including Antoine Semenyo, who found little space against the disciplined Central American defence.
Panama looked the more threatening side in the early stages and came close to taking the lead on several occasions.
Their confidence grew as the game progressed, while Ghana struggled to register meaningful efforts on goal.
The Black Stars failed to produce a shot in the opening half and often found themselves reacting to Panama’s attacking moves.
Ghana manager Carlos Queiroz attempted to change the tempo of the match with substitutions, introducing Brandon Thomas-Asante in the second half.
The forward brought fresh energy to the attack and played a decisive role in the game's defining moment.
With the match seemingly heading for a draw, Ghana launched one final attack deep into stoppage time. Thomas-Asante found space on the left flank before delivering a low cross into the penalty area.
Yirenkyi reacted quickest, forcing the ball past the goalkeeper from close range in the 95th minute to spark wild celebrations among the Ghanaian players and supporters.
Panama pushed forward desperately in search of an equaliser during the closing moments but could not find a breakthrough.
The victory gives Ghana a valuable three points and a strong start to their World Cup campaign, while Panama are left with a difficult task ahead in their remaining group fixtures.
