Portugal were held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo in their opening Group K match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Houston.

Despite dominating possession and creating more chances, Roberto Martínez’s side were unable to secure all three points. João Neves gave Portugal an early lead with a well-taken header just five minutes into the game, setting the tone for what looked like a comfortable evening.

However, DR Congo responded strongly and grew into the match. Their persistence paid off just before half-time when Yoane Wissa equalised with a header of his own, silencing the Portuguese supporters.

The second half saw Portugal push forward in search of a winner, with Cristiano Ronaldo playing the full 90 minutes, but the team struggled to convert their dominance into goals.

Ronaldo, making another appearance in what is likely his final World Cup campaign, looked frustrated as chances went begging.

Under pressure, Portugal increased their attacking intensity but DR Congo defended resiliently and managed to hold on for a historic point.

For DR Congo, the result marked a strong return to the World Cup stage after decades away, showing their growth under coach Sébastien Desabre. Portugal, meanwhile, will need to improve their finishing ahead of tougher Group K fixtures.

The result leaves both teams with something to build on, as the group remains open and competitive.
