World Cup 2026: Koulibaly Confident Senegal Will Bounce Back After France Defeat
Kalidou Koulibaly remains optimistic that Senegal can recover from their opening defeat to France at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the team still has enough quality to bounce back in the tournament.
The Teranga Lions began their campaign with a 3-1 loss to the European giants in a Group clash played on Tuesday night.
Despite the scoreline, Senegal showed moments of promise, especially in the first half where Nicolas Jackson and Ismaila Sarr came close to finding the net but were denied by fine finishing and solid defending.
However, the game slipped away after the restart as France took full control. Kylian Mbappé struck twice to extend his reputation as one of the tournament’s most decisive players, while Bradley Barcola added a third goal to seal a comfortable win for the former world champions.
Speaking after the match, Koulibaly admitted disappointment but stressed that the result should not define Senegal’s campaign. He noted that the team started strongly and created problems for France early on, but lost control in key moments during the second half.
The experienced defender also acknowledged the strength of the French side, describing them as one of the best teams in world football given their consistency in recent tournaments.
Looking ahead, Koulibaly urged his teammates to correct their defensive lapses and improve their finishing in front of goal. He emphasized that conceding three goals at this stage of the competition is unacceptable if Senegal hopes to progress further.
Senegal will now turn their attention to their next Group fixture against Norway on 23 June, a match Koulibaly believes is crucial for restoring confidence and keeping their qualification hopes alive.
