Messi Equals World Cup Scoring Record as Argentina Crush Algeria 3–0

By Okiki Oluwasegun

Lionel Messi produced a historic performance as Argentina opened their 2026 World Cup campaign with a dominant 3–0 victory over Algeria in Kansas City, equalling the all-time World Cup goalscoring record in the process.

The reigning champions began their title defence in confident fashion, with Messi immediately at the centre of the action. Both he and Algeria’s Farès Chaïbi had early goals ruled out for offside, but the Argentina captain soon settled the contest with a moment of brilliance.

Picking up the ball outside the area, he glided past his marker and curled a precise finish beyond the goalkeeper to give Argentina the lead in the 17th minute.

Algeria worked hard to stay in the game and limited Argentina’s chances in the first half, with Emiliano Martínez rarely tested.

However, Argentina maintained control of possession and gradually increased their attacking threat after the break.

Messi doubled his tally in the second half, reacting quickest after a rebound inside the box to finish calmly and extend Argentina’s advantage. His movement and awareness continued to trouble the Algerian defence throughout the match.

The 38-year-old completed his hat-trick in the 76th minute with a trademark curling strike from the edge of the area, sealing a memorable night in his 200th international appearance.

The goals also saw him match the long-standing World Cup scoring record previously held by Miroslav Klose.

Algeria showed moments of resilience but struggled to convert possession into clear chances. Argentina, meanwhile, demonstrated their efficiency and experience as they began their quest to defend the world title in style.
