Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has called on the club to consider bringing Scott McTominay back to Old Trafford, praising the midfielder’s impact since his move to Napoli.

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, Rooney admitted he was surprised when United allowed the academy graduate to leave in 2024, insisting the decision still raises questions given the player’s importance at the time.

According to him, McTominay was one of the most reliable figures in the squad during his final period at the club, particularly due to his energy, discipline, and willingness to contribute in decisive moments.

“I couldn’t believe Man United let him go when they did because he obviously works extremely hard,” Rooney said. He added that McTominay’s ability to influence games and score crucial goals made him a valuable asset, especially during periods when the team lacked intensity.

Rooney further stated that McTominay was the kind of player every manager would want in a competitive squad, noting that his presence often lifted the team’s performance levels.

Since joining Napoli, the Scottish midfielder has enjoyed a remarkable rise, becoming a key figure in the Italian side’s midfield.

His performances under Antonio Conte have earned widespread praise, with reports suggesting he played a central role in Napoli’s recent league success.

However, his resurgence has also reignited interest from Manchester United supporters and pundits who now question the decision to let him leave in the first place.

Napoli are reportedly valuing the midfielder at around £44 million, making any potential return a difficult but intriguing possibility for the Premier League club as they look to rebuild their midfield options.
