France forward Ousmane Dembélé has stepped forward in defence of national team captain Kylian Mbappé, insisting that the heavy criticism directed at the Real Madrid star has become excessive and unfair.

Mbappé has been under intense scrutiny in Spain following a disappointing trophyless season with Real Madrid, while debates around his leadership role with the French national team have also continued since he was appointed captain in 2023.

Speaking in an interview with Spanish outlet Marca, Dembélé expressed concern over the growing negativity surrounding his teammate, saying some of the comments directed at him go beyond acceptable criticism.

According to him, Mbappé is often judged too harshly simply because of his global reputation and high profile in football.

He described the striker as both an outstanding player and a grounded individual off the pitch, adding that much of the backlash is exaggerated.

Dembélé noted that even small, ordinary actions by Mbappé tend to attract unnecessary attention, stressing that he is still a human being despite his fame and achievements.

He also highlighted Mbappé’s importance within the national team setup, describing him as a strong leader and a positive presence in the dressing room.

The France winger made the comments during an impressive personal run of form, as he remains in contention for major individual honours following PSG’s recent Champions League success.

Both players are expected to play key roles for France at the upcoming World Cup, where the team will aim for another strong tournament showing.

Dembélé also praised coach Didier Deschamps, who will leave his role after the competition, calling him one of France’s greatest managers.
