Danish football star Christian Eriksen is conscious and recovering after collapsing during Denmark’s international friendly against Ukraine, an incident that briefly shocked players, officials, and fans at the stadium.

The 34-year-old midfielder went down in the 65th minute of the match in Odense after appearing to clutch his chest.

The referee immediately stopped play as medical staff rushed onto the pitch. The match was later abandoned in the 79th minute due to the emergency situation.

Team doctor Morten Boesen confirmed that Eriksen briefly lost consciousness but regained it quickly following urgent medical attention.

“He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly,” Boesen said.

The incident brought back painful memories of Eriksen’s collapse during Denmark’s Euro 2020 clash against Finland in 2021, when he suffered a cardiac arrest and was resuscitated on the pitch. Following that event, he was fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD), a device that helps regulate heart rhythm.

Players from both Denmark and Ukraine rushed to his aid as medical teams stabilized him on the pitch. The Danish Football Association later confirmed that Eriksen was in stable condition and responding well.

Boesen added that Eriksen was able to walk off the pitch and that his implanted device appeared to function correctly during the incident.

“He will undergo further medical examinations to determine the cause, but he is doing well and even sent his regards to teammates,” he said.

Both Denmark and Ukraine have since missed out on qualification for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
