Friendly: Chelle Explains Bold Selection Calls In Poland Draw

By Okiki Oluwasegun

Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has shed light on his decision to make seven substitutions at halftime during the Super Eagles’ 2-2 draw with Poland in an international friendly played in Warsaw.

The encounter, held at the PGE Narodowy Stadium on Wednesday, formed part of Nigeria’s preparations for upcoming competitive fixtures.

Chelle opted to make significant changes after the opening 45 minutes, introducing fresh legs across different areas of the pitch.

Among the players brought on were Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, Zaidu Sanusi, Raphael Onyedika, Paul Onuachu, Rafiu Durosinmi and Philip Otele.

They replaced Emmanuel Fernandez, Bruno Onyemaechi, Terem Moffi, Igoh Ogbu, Frank Onyeka, Tochukwu Nnadi and Akor Adams.

Speaking after the game, the Malian tactician explained that several members of his squad were not in peak condition because they had already begun their post-season breaks. As a result, he felt it was necessary to manage their workload and avoid unnecessary physical strain.

According to Chelle, some players struggled to maintain their intensity as the game progressed, making the halftime reshuffle the best option for the team.

The coach also pointed to the condition of his captain, noting that the player was unable to sustain his usual level of performance beyond the hour mark.

Despite the numerous changes, the Super Eagles battled back to secure a draw against the hosts, with Chelle using the match to assess his squad ahead of next week's friendly against Portugal.
