Liverpool Captain Breaks Silence On Slot Sacking
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has revealed that he was not involved in the club’s decision to dismiss manager Arne Slot, admitting the news came as a shock to him.
The Dutch defender said he first learned about Slot’s departure after arriving in Amsterdam, where reports of the manager’s exit had already surfaced.
According to Van Dijk, Liverpool’s hierarchy made the decision without seeking his opinion, despite his status as one of the club’s most senior players.
Slot’s exit follows a disappointing campaign that saw Liverpool finish fifth in the Premier League. The result was considered below expectations and ultimately convinced the club’s owners to make a managerial change. The former Feyenoord boss spent two years at Anfield after succeeding Jurgen Klopp in 2024.
Speaking after the Netherlands’ defeat to Algeria, Van Dijk expressed appreciation for Slot and his assistant, Sipke Hulshoff. He praised their contribution to the club and wished them well in their future endeavors.
Liverpool have already moved quickly to identify a replacement, with former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola expected to take charge ahead of the new season.
Van Dijk remains a key figure at Anfield and was one of Liverpool’s most consistent performers throughout the campaign.
The centre-back featured in every Premier League match and contributed six goals from defence.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the managerial transition, the Netherlands international remains confident that Liverpool can move forward successfully and challenge for major honours under a new coach.
