World number one Jannik Sinner has suffered a shocking exit from the 2026 French Open after losing to Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo in a dramatic five-set clash at Roland Garros.

The Italian star, who entered the tournament as one of the strongest favourites for the title, looked to be cruising into the next round after taking the opening two sets comfortably. Sinner was also leading 5-1 in the third set before the match suddenly turned around.

The 24-year-old appeared to struggle physically as the encounter progressed under the intense Paris heat. During the match, Sinner requested medical attention after showing signs of discomfort and exhaustion on court.

Cerundolo took full advantage of the situation and staged an impressive comeback to secure victory in five sets.

The Argentine displayed resilience and energy as Sinner’s movement and performance dropped significantly in the later stages of the contest.

The defeat ends Sinner’s hopes of winning his first French Open title and completing a career Grand Slam this year.

Many tennis fans had tipped him as the favourite, especially with Carlos Alcaraz unavailable through injury.

Sinner also arrived in Paris in excellent form, having enjoyed a long winning streak and several major titles in recent months.

However, the extreme weather conditions once again proved difficult for the Italian, whose tournament journey came to an unexpected end far earlier than anticipated.
