Iga Swiatek Survives Scare To Reach Italian Open Third Round

By Okiki Oluwasegun

Iga Swiatek overcame a difficult challenge at the Italian Open on Friday to secure her place in the third round after defeating American player Caty McNally in a tense three-set encounter.

The world number one began the match strongly, showing her dominance early and quickly taking control of the opening set. Swiatek’s aggressive play and movement on clay allowed her to dictate the tempo as she raced through the first set with little resistance.

However, the momentum shifted in the second set as McNally improved her level and pushed the Polish star into a much tougher battle. The American broke Swiatek at key moments and forced a tie-break, eventually taking the set to keep the contest alive.

The deciding set produced another intense exchange before Swiatek regained control in the closing stages. Drawing from her experience on clay, the three-time Rome champion held her nerve and finished strongly to avoid a shock exit from the tournament.

Following the match, Swiatek admitted it was a difficult contest and praised McNally’s performance. She explained that patience and mental focus helped her recover after losing the second set.

Elsewhere in the women’s draw, world number one Aryna Sabalenka progressed comfortably after defeating Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets. The Belarusian delivered a confident performance as she continued her quest for a first Italian Open title.

Defending champion Jasmine Paolini also advanced after fighting back from a set down to defeat Leolia Jeanjean in a hard-fought match.

Meanwhile, attention is also turning to the men’s tournament, where Novak Djokovic is preparing to make his first clay-court appearance of the season following his return from injury.

The Italian Open continues to gather momentum as top stars battle for important victories ahead of the French Open later this month.
