Injury Blow As Alcaraz Withdraws From French Open Title Defence

Two-time French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz has confirmed he will not defend his title at this year’s tournament due to a wrist injury, dealing a major blow to fans ahead of the clay-court Grand Slam.

The Spanish star announced on Friday that medical tests on his right wrist showed he was not fit enough to compete, forcing him to withdraw not only from the French Open but also from the Italian Open in Rome.

The 22-year-old explained that the decision was made after careful consultation with his team, prioritising his long-term fitness over immediate competition.

Alcaraz revealed that the injury was sustained during his opening match at the Barcelona Open, where he secured a win but later pulled out of the tournament due to discomfort.

His absence had already been anticipated after he withdrew from the Madrid Masters earlier in April, raising concerns about his availability for Roland Garros.

The world number two has enjoyed a remarkable run in recent seasons, including back-to-back triumphs at French Open in 2024 and 2025.

His dominance on clay made him one of the favourites heading into this year’s edition, scheduled to take place from late May to early June.

Alcaraz admitted the decision to sit out the tournament was difficult but necessary to avoid aggravating the injury.

He stressed that returning too soon could risk long-term damage, adding that he remains focused on making a full recovery before stepping back onto the court.

His withdrawal could open the door for rivals, including Jannik Sinner, who recently defeated him to claim the Monte Carlo Masters title. With Alcaraz sidelined, the competition for the title is expected to become even more intense.

Despite the setback, Alcaraz remains optimistic about his recovery and future, assuring fans that he will return stronger once fully fit.
