British Boxer Lawrence Okolie Hit With Setback Before Heavyweight Clash In Paris
British heavyweight boxer Lawrence Okolie is facing uncertainty ahead of his scheduled bout with France’s Tony Yoka after returning an adverse finding in a routine anti-doping test.
The development was confirmed on Tuesday by promoters Queensberry Promotions, who revealed that the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) notified them of the test result earlier this week.
The timing of the issue is particularly significant as Okolie was expected to return to the ring in Paris this Saturday.
The 33-year-old, a former cruiserweight world champion, had been preparing for what was billed as a major heavyweight clash against Yoka, the 2016 Olympic super-heavyweight gold medallist. However, the unexpected result has now cast doubt over the fight’s immediate future.
According to the promoters, discussions are ongoing to determine the next steps, including the possibility of finding a replacement opponent for Yoka if the bout cannot proceed as planned. An official update regarding the event is expected in due course.
Okolie recently moved up to the heavyweight division at the end of 2024 and has been unbeaten in his new weight class, recording three consecutive victories.
He currently holds a strong reputation in the division and is ranked seventh globally by boxing statistics platform Boxrec.
Over the course of his professional career, Okolie has built an impressive record of 23 wins, with 17 coming by knockout, alongside just a single defeat.
His rise in the heavyweight category had been closely watched as he aimed to establish himself among the top contenders.
The situation has also disrupted promotional activities, with a scheduled press conference in Paris reportedly cancelled following the emergence of the test result.
As investigations continue, attention now shifts to how both camps will respond and whether the highly anticipated fight will be rescheduled, adjusted, or replaced entirely.
