FIBA Sets Deadline For NBBF Board Elections Amid Governance Concerns

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has instructed the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) to conduct board elections by October 15, 2026.

The directive follows concerns from stakeholders and former board members about the expiration of the tenure of the current Musa Kida-led board, which ended on January 31, 2026, according to the federation’s constitution.

Petitions were sent to FIBA seeking guidance to ensure adherence to constitutional protocols and to avoid claims of external interference.

FIBA Secretary-General Andreas Zagklis, in a letter addressing the federation, acknowledged receiving petitions regarding governance issues and election timelines.

The international body noted that governance disputes have plagued the NBBF since 2017, often intensifying during election periods.

Past crises even forced Nigeria’s withdrawal from the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup and led to sanctions against the federation. FIBA intervened to restore stability, resulting in the normalization of the federation in October 2022.

Under the new directive, the current board will remain in office until October 15, 2026, with elections scheduled after the conclusion of the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup on September 13.

The new board is expected to assume office no later than October 16, 2026. FIBA emphasized that the elections must be conducted according to existing NBBF statutes, stating that any recent amendments to the federation’s constitution will not be recognized for the purpose of this electoral process.

The directive underscores FIBA’s commitment to transparency and credibility in Nigerian basketball administration.

Stakeholders are expected to closely monitor the election process, which aims to prevent the recurrence of past governance crises that have hindered the growth and development of basketball in Nigeria.

The upcoming election cycle is poised to be a defining moment for the NBBF, as it seeks to consolidate stability, ensure compliance with international standards, and set the stage for the continued progress of basketball nationwide.
