EPL: Man Utd strengthen top-four hopes with 3-1 win over Aston Villa
Manchester United boosted their hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League after securing a convincing 3–1 victory over Aston Villa in a crucial Premier League clash on Sunday.
The match at Old Trafford saw United deliver a strong second-half performance to claim an important three points in the race for a top-four finish.
After a relatively quiet first half, the breakthrough came in the 53rd minute when Brazilian midfielder Casemiro headed home from a corner delivered by captain Bruno Fernandes to give the hosts the lead.
Villa responded in the 64th minute through Ross Barkley, who produced a powerful strike from close range to level the score after United failed to clear the danger.
However, United quickly regained control of the match. Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha restored the lead in the 71st minute after finishing calmly from a brilliant pass by Fernandes.
Substitute Benjamin Šeško sealed the victory in the 81st minute when his effort took a slight deflection before beating Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.
Fernandes was one of the standout performers in the match, registering two assists to take his total to 16 in the league this season. The Portuguese playmaker also reached a major milestone, recording 100 assists for Manchester United across all competitions since joining the club in 2020. In doing so, he surpassed the previous club record of 15 Premier League assists set by David Beckham during the 1999–2000 campaign.
The victory leaves Manchester United third in the Premier League table, three points ahead of fourth-placed Aston Villa as the battle for Champions League qualification intensifies.
