AFCON 2025: Amokachi Names Three Standout Players At Tournament
Former Nigeria international and football legend Daniel Amokachi has highlighted three players he believes have quietly impressed so far at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Amokachi named Senegal’s Ibrahim Mbaye, Nigeria’s Raphael Onyedika, and Morocco’s Ayoub El Kaabi as the standout performers who may not always grab headlines but have delivered strong performances at the tournament.
Speaking on Mbaye’s impact, Amokachi praised the Senegalese attacker’s effectiveness despite not starting games. He noted that Mbaye has come off the bench in all three of Senegal’s group matches and consistently made a difference. According to him, the player’s ability to create chances and provide assists has been crucial to Senegal’s success in the competition so far.
Onyedika also earned praise from the former Super Eagles striker for his composure and influence in midfield. Amokachi pointed out that although the Club Brugge midfielder was benched for Nigeria’s first group game, he made a strong impression when he featured later in the group stage. He added that Onyedika’s performance in the third group match showed maturity and control, helping Nigeria maintain balance and stability in midfield.
Amokachi further reserved special praise for Moroccan forward Ayoub El Kaabi, who has been among the goals at the tournament. He described El Kaabi as one of the most decisive players so far, noting that the striker has scored two of the best goals seen at the competition. His finishing ability and positioning have played a key role in Morocco’s attacking strength.
As the knockout phase of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations continues, Amokachi’s selections underline the importance of players who consistently influence games, even without widespread attention. His comments also highlight how individual brilliance can quietly shape a team’s progress at major tournaments.
