“Messi Has No Rival” — Jordi Alba Warns Fans Against Comparing Lamine Yamal to Barca Legend
Former Barcelona defender Jordi Alba has dismissed the increasing comparisons between football icon Lionel Messi and rising teenage star Lamine Yamal, describing the debate as unrealistic and unfair.
The former Blaugrana full-back stressed that although Yamal is an exceptional emerging talent, Messi’s legendary status places him far beyond any comparison.
Yamal, just 18 years old, has quickly grown into one of Barcelona’s brightest prospects, earning global recognition for his impressive performances. Many fans and analysts have tipped him as the natural heir to Messi, especially after he inherited the club’s iconic No.10 shirt during the summer — a symbolic gesture that fuelled expectations even further.
The young winger’s flair, dribbling ability and confidence have drawn admiration, with several observers suggesting he could be the future face of the club. However, Alba believes the excitement around Yamal should not be confused with the unparalleled standards Messi set over his two decades at the top.
Speaking to El Larguero (via Diario Sport), Alba was firm in his position: “Comparing Lamine with Leo… There is no possible comparison. Leo Messi has no rival in my opinion.” Having played alongside Messi for years in La Liga and later in MLS, Alba said he has seen firsthand the extraordinary quality that defines the Argentine’s legacy.
His comments reflect the sentiments of many within Barcelona’s old guard, who believe Yamal deserves room to grow without the weight of Messi’s shadow.
While they acknowledge Yamal’s potential to become a club icon, they insist Messi’s achievements from Ballon d’Or titles to historic records place him in a league of his own.
For now, Yamal continues to develop, carrying both the expectations of a fanbase and the reassurance of legends urging patience.
