UEFA Women’s Euro 2029 Hosting Race Narrows to Four Candidates
UEFA has announced the list of candidates bidding to host the 2029 Women’s European Championship after Italy withdrew from the race.
The continent’s football governing body confirmed on Friday, August 29, 2025, that Germany, Poland, Portugal, and a joint bid from Denmark and Sweden remain in contention. Italy pulled out due to already co-hosting the 2032 men’s edition with Turkey.
UEFA is expected to announce the winning host on December 3, 2025.
The 2029 tournament will follow the format used since 2017, with 16 teams competing.
UEFA’s hosting requirements allow for joint bids, provided the countries are neighbors, and stipulate that the host nation must have at least one stadium with a 50,000 capacity and three others capable of accommodating 30,000 spectators.
Germany emerges as the heavyweight contender for the tournament, having hosted the men’s Euro 2024 and narrowly missing out to Brazil in the race to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
The country has a rich history in women’s football, being eight-time European champions.
UEFA officials highlighted the success of the 2025 Women’s Euro in Switzerland, where England retained their title.
The tournament drew record crowds, with 657,300 spectators attending 29 of the 31 matches. UEFA aims to maintain this high standard and ensure that the 2029 edition continues to elevate the profile of women’s football in Europe.
“The competition continues to grow in popularity and quality, and we expect the 2029 Women’s Euro to build on the successes of recent editions,” a UEFA spokesperson said on August 29, 2025.
The decision on the host will shape preparations for the tournament, including infrastructure, logistics, and fan engagement strategies, as UEFA seeks to create a high-quality, memorable championship that will further advance women’s football across Europe.
