Club World Cup 2025: Bayern, Flamengo Secure Knockout Spots
Bayern Munich have joined Flamengo in the Round of 16 of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, following a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Boca Juniors in the United States.
The German giants, managed by Vincent Kompany, made it two wins from two games after their record-setting 10-0 demolition of Auckland City earlier in the week. Facing tougher opposition in Boca Juniors, Bayern relied on key moments from star players to seal progression.
England captain Harry Kane gave the Bundesliga side an early advantage, firing home in the 18th minute. But Boca responded in the second half through Miguel Merential, who produced a brilliant individual effort to level the tie in the 66th minute.
The deadlock didn’t last long. Michael Olise, already making a name for himself in the tournament, delivered again with a decisive goal that handed Bayern the victory and a place in the knockout rounds.
Bayern now sit atop their group and need just a draw in their final group match against Benfica to secure first place. Topping the group could set up a blockbuster Round of 16 clash with Chelsea—if the London club manage to finish second in their group.
Meanwhile, Flamengo were the first side to qualify after staging a comeback to beat Chelsea 3-1 on Friday. The Brazilian club came alive in the second half, overturning a deficit and eliminating the Premier League side from early contention.
As the tournament progresses, fans can expect more upsets and drama, with elite clubs from around the world battling for a coveted title.
