Naomi Osaka pulled out of Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo on Thursday, citing abdominal pain for her to withdraw from the tournament.

The 24-year-old was billed to play Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia in the second round but withdrew saying her "body won't let" her compete.

A statement from Osaka which was released by the organisers read: "It's an honour to be able to play at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in front of the amazing fans here in Japan’ This has and always will be a special tournament for me and I wish I could have stepped on court today, but my body won't let me. Thank you for all your support this week and I will see you next year".

The four-time Grand Slam winner, was looking to end a poor run of form in Tokyo, having won the tournament the last time in 2019.

Osaka’s poor run of form which includes crashing out in the first round of her previous three tournament, saw her plummet to 48 in the women's world. She’s been outside the top 10 all year and endured first-round defeats at both the French and US Opens.
