Nigeria Striker Cyril Dessers has joined Belgian Pro League club Genk on a four-year contract from Hercules.

The 25-year-old was linked with several European clubs but he has chosen to pitch his tent with the Belgian club.

Dessers enjoyed an impressive debut campaign at Hercules in the Dutch league, where he scored 18 goals and provided six assists in all competitions.

Genk’s sporting director Dimitri de Conde has described the new signing as a real goalscorer and he is confident he will take his game to the next level at Genk.

“Cyriel has developed excellently in the Netherlands as a footballer and as a real goalscorer,” he told the club website.

“He is Belgian, still young and ready to take the next step in his career. The fact that he was a supporter of our club as a child only makes it even better.”

For the Belgian-Nigerian, who had spells at OH Leuven, Lokeren, NAC Breda and FC Utrecht, joining the Smurfs is a dream come true.

“As a little boy, you dream of great things. I dreamed of KRC Genk,” Dessers tweeted.

He committed his International future to Nigeria ahead of Belgium in December.

Dessers was handed his first Super Eagles call-up for the Nations Cup qualifiers against Sierra Leone, before the outbreak of the coronavirus prompted the postponement of the matches.
