Manchester City draw Real Madrid in Champions League semi-finals
Manchester City have been drawn with Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals while Bayern Munich will take on Atletico Madrid.
Cristiano Ronaldo will return to Manchester for the final four clash, after Real Madrid were able to overturn a 2-0 first leg deficit against Wolfsburg to win 3-0 at the Bernabeu and advance. Manchester City progressed after a Kevin de Bruyne goal earned them a 1-0 victory over PSG at the Ethiad to win 3-2 on aggregate
The other semi-final sees Bayern Munich take on Atletico Madrid. Diego Simeone’s men stunningly knocked out holders Barcelona last Wednesday after a 2-0 win wiped out their 2-1 first leg deficit while Bayern Munich qualified for the penultimate stage after a 4-2 aggregate win over Benfica.
The semi-final draw means there is still a possiblity of Pep Guardiola’s Bayern playing Manchester City in the final just weeks before he joins them as their new manager.
The Spaniard has yet to win the Champions League during his time in Bavaria, with his team getting knocked out at the semi-final stage during the last two campaigns.
Manchester City, who are appearing at this stage for the first time would be looking to edge out 27-time semi-finalists and ten-time winners, Real Madrid. Atlético and Bayern have met only twice – both in the 1974 European Cup final. The Spanish side were seconds away from taking the trophy before Georg Schwarzenbeck's 120th-minute equaliser gave Bayern a 1-1 draw; two days later, the German club won the replay 4-0 to take the trophy for the first time.
Atlético are unbeaten in their last five home matches against German clubs, winning four of the games and drawing only one.
Bayern had their first loss in Spain in the semi-finals in each of the last two seasons, going down 1-0 at Real Madrid in 2013/14 (0-5 aggregate) and 3-0 at Barcelona last year (3-5 aggregate). The German club have won only two of their last 12 trips to Spain, losing eight.
The first legs hold on 27th and 28th of April while the second legs hold on 4th and 5th of May.
