Big budget films with huge profits, Nollywood must learn from this
Hollywood is the world of glitz and glitters, and one of the easiest formulas to make a glitzy-blitsy celluloid venture is the heavy funds! Though talent, stars, plot and crew are the major wings of a successful movie, cash is the ultimate modus operandi!
There are hundreds of movies produced with heavy monetary investments, but not all of them made it big at the box office. This article is dedicated to the five big budget movies which made huge profit at the box office. We start with the most expensive production, which is incidentally the latest in the list as well!
1. Avatar (2009) – officially $280 million and unofficially more than $300 million! James Cameron dream project was produced with an estimated budget of $280 million. Though the official figures are $237 million, revised figures reported later say it's more than $350 to $500. The sci-fi fantasy made $2,690,440,529 and became the first movie to cross $2 billion gross profit. Thanks to the special effects and mesmerising 3D visual magic created by Cameron, the movie paid off both the expense and the effort.
2. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) – $300 million. The adventure film by Jerry Bruckheimer was made with a heavy budget of $300 million and it grossed $960,996,492 at the BO. Though the figures are more than that of Avatar, it is actually a part of $450 joint budget with its prequel Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest! So, it loses to Avatar in terms of single-film production.
3. Spiderman 3 (2007) – $258 millions to be estimated over the superhero film which is the second sequel to Spiderman by Tobey Maguire. It grossed revenue of $890,871,626 and the main money quencher is the brand name Spiderman! Though the storyline was not upto the mark of its previous two prequels, the reception was moderate, if not poor.
4. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) – $250 million. The magic of the wizard wiz kid earned $933,959,197 at the box office with an initial production budget of $250 million. David Heyman and David Barron transformed the novel series into the film series and there was no looking back for the Harry Potter team since then.
5. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008) – $225 million. Well, actually it's a tie between this epic fantasy film and the prequel of the 2nd ranked movie in our list (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest). Narnia grossed $419,651,413 and was accepted well by the critics as well as by the fans, however failed to create much impact and had a moderate positive response.
Films like Cleopatra, Titanic, Superman Returns, Waterworld and King Kong are worth mentionable for their high budgets, but the exact figures made them fall short of making it into the list!
