Manchester United: Louis Van Gaal Backs Midweek Friendlies

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has backed the idea of the club playing midweek friendlies abroad.

Reports suggest a lack of Champions League football this season could cost United more than £40m.

Managing director Richard Arnold said on Tuesday the club would “continue to look at” lucrative fixtures overseas.

“I fully agree,” said Van Gaal. “I spoke with Ed [Woodward] and Richard last week. I like to play midweek games against high-level opponents.”

An early League Cup exit means United are scheduled to play only three more competitive midweek games this season, all in the Premier League, though that would increase if they require any FA Cup replays.

And Van Gaal is keen to wait until later in the season to schedule the friendlies.

“I have said in the first three months we must wait because it's difficult enough for the players to adapt to the new playing style and organisation.

“They shall honour that. I like to play midweek games against high level opponents.”
