Edo lawmakers elect new Speaker, crisis not yet over

Members of the Edo house of Assembly has elected a new speaker, Hon Bright

Omokhodion from Esan West Constituency and Paul Ohombamu from Egor Constituency

as Deputy Speaker.
Philip Shaibu, Etsako West II, was nominated as Majority Leader and Patrick Osayeme,

Oredo II as Minority Whip.
However, the impeached speaker disagreed, he said his removal was illegal and

unconstitutional adding that he remains the legitimate speaker of the house. He explained

that section of 92 (2) of the 1999 Constitution allows speaker and deputy speaker can

only be impeached with at least two third majority which is 16 signatories which he said

“they don't have”
Edo State High Court sitting in Benin City has restrained Garuba and Levis Aigbogun from

parading themselves as Speaker and Deputy Speaker.

Meanwhile, Edo State High Court sitting in Benin City has restrained Garuba and Levis

Aigbogun from parading themselves as Speaker and Deputy Speaker. The court also

urged the police to refrain from sealing up the assembly.
