95 Killed In Petrol Tanker Accident

SAN FRANCISCO, July 12, (THEWILL) – Members of the Federal Road Safety Commission say they have recovered about 95 burnt bodies from the scene of a petrol tanker accident which occured at Okobe, Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State.

According to the FRSC Sector Commander for Rivers State, Dr. Kayode Olagunju, casualty figures on the Okobe tanker accident on Ahoada - Mbiama on the East-West road in Rivers state as at 13:00 hrs had reached 95.

Mr. Olagunju also stated that 93 persons had died on the spot (burnt), 2 died in the hospital, making 95 deaths, while a total of 18 persons were injured.

The accident also destroyed the tanker, a Toyota corolla saloon car , 1 hummer jeep and a Mitshibushi transport bus. He said a total of 34 motorcycles were burnt in the inferno.

The casualties recorded was as a result of people scooping fuel from the crashed tanker which exploded and killed almost all the people on the scene.

Injured victims have been taken to nearby hospitals, as men of the FRSC, police and fire service are at the scene for rescue operation.
