TY DANJUMA HOSTS WORKSHOP FOR THE BLIND

TY Danjuma Foundation is sponsoring a one week workshop on Braille, Mobility and Chess for the Blind in collaboration with the Anglo-Nigerian Welfare Association (ANWAB)

In a statement signed by the Director ANWAB, Danlami Basharu, it stated that the workshop is the first of two such that will be hosted by the TY Danjuma Foundation while the second will take place in Taraba state later in the year.

According to him, training in the identified skills will be imparted to blind students and their teachers by carefully selected persons, while parents and the community will serve as observers and important agents for the advancement of the knowledge required during the workshop.

He said Braille is the major method of reading and writing used by blind persons all over the world, but stated that in Nigeria less than 1 % (50,000) of the nearly five million blind people can read and write in Braille, adding that another aspect of the workshop will impart the need for recreation through the game of Chess.

The training workshop falls under the TY Danjuma Foundation Programme area of enhancing quality of education. Participating schools include FCT Primary school for the Blind Jabi, Government Day Junior Secondary School Kwali and Government Secondary School, Kwali.

The Foundation, Nigerian leader in ensuring qualitative living standards for the masses is providing full funding to meet the cost of executing the Programme, including providing all equipments and items utilized in training such as the Perkins Braille machines, Slates and styluses, Mobility canes among other
