KANO, May 22, (THEWILL) - The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Kano state Command on Tuesday arrested 45 Chinese nationals for economic scavenging in the popular Kantin Kwari textile market. In addition to the mass arrest, NIS is also set to immediately repatriate them.

Kano State Comptroller of the Service, Dr. Emmanuel Brasca Udo Ifeadi said the arrest was a national issue, as it was directed by the comptroller-general of the Service.

“Out of the arrested Chinese nationals, 11 are women. It is an exercise to make the economy of the country get healthier but only with quality foreign expatriates. Those economic scavengers will be deported to their country,” he said. “Chinese nationals are selling textile in market. That of Kano is worrisome, and so the comptroller-general feels that enough is enough.”

He further disclosed that all those foreign nationals trading in the market, who are wreaking “economic havoc” on the country, will be arrested and repatriated.

“For Chinese citizens to come to our country and sell textiles in our market, we will not allow it. We will continue checking them, arresting them and deporting them,” he added. “Chinese select basic areas in the country, but basically the exercise holds in Kano, Lagos and Ibadan.”
