SAN FRANCISCO, December 17, (THEWILL) – Sokoto State Governor, Aliyu Wamakko has emerged winner of the Sokoto State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary conducted to pick a candidate for the party in next year’s governorship race.

Wamakko, who is the incumbent governor of Sokoto State, defeated former Sports Minister, Alhaji Yusuf Suleiman and Senator Abubakar Gada who both abstained from participating in the primary.

Recall that Suleiman was relieved of his appointment as minister a few days ago, after he declared his interest in the race. It is however not clear why he abstained from the primary, but a PDP source said he chickened out when it became glaring he didn’t have the delegates to defeat Wamakko.

The governor polled 956 votes at the primary supervised by a panel headed the Minister of State for Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike.

Wike, after declaring Wamakko winner, said the governor would represent the party in the election billed for March 10, 2012, and thanked party members and delegates for the success of the process.
